Blue sapphire case with one row setting
An RM 07-02 in blue sapphire with a single row of stones following the case, on a white strap. The dial is set with a blue centre panel.
The case is machined from sections of blue sapphire taken from a single block. Richard Mille states this requires almost forty days of machining and finishing; the tonneau form is particularly difficult to produce in sapphire because of its curved lines, and the material permits no cutting error.

Design and engineering
- Blue sapphire caseMachined from sections cut from a single block of coloured sapphire. Sapphire scores 9 on the Mohs scale, second only to diamond.
- Coloured sapphireMetal oxides are incorporated into the crystalline structure to produce the colour.
- One row settingA single line of stones follows the case. On gem-set sapphire cases, a laser performs the mitraillage — drilling the holes for the stones — accurate to the nearest micron, after which separately made hand-polished gold prongs are inserted to hold the stones.
- Calibre CRMA5Skeletonised in-house automatic movement with hours, minutes and variable-geometry rotor. Richard Mille specifies white gold baseplate and bridges for the blue version.
- Free-sprung balance with variable inertiaThe regulator index is eliminated; four small adjustable weights are located directly on the balance.
