Sapphire-cased automatic
The RM 07-02 is a separate reference from the RM 07-01, with its own calibre and case dimensions. The case is machined from sections of coloured sapphire taken from a single block. Richard Mille states that the case requires almost forty days of machining and finishing; the tonneau form is particularly difficult to produce in sapphire because of its curved lines, and the material permits no cutting error. Sapphire rates 9 on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness.
Coloured sapphire is produced by incorporating metal oxides into the crystalline structure. Inside is the CRMA5, an in-house skeletonised automatic movement displaying hours and minutes, wound by a variable-geometry rotor. On the blue and green versions the baseplate and bridges are white gold; on the pink and brown versions they are 5N red gold. The baseplate is set with hundreds of diamonds.
