Overview

Carbon execution of the RM 025 diver’s tourbillon chronograph

The RM 025 was first released in titanium with lugs in 18ct red gold. A carbon version followed, shown at Watches & Wonders in Hong Kong and reported in January 2015. The round case is water resistant to 300 metres, a depth only achievable in Richard Mille’s range with a round form rather than the tonneau.

The dial distinguishes this execution from the titanium and red gold original: the five-minute markers of the first quarter are printed in white rather than red, with the remaining numerals in light grey. The strap is Kalrez® perfluoroelastomer, made by Biwi SA, chosen for resistance to chemical absorption and to heat.

Design and engineering

  • Carbon nanofibre baseplateThe baseplate is carbon nanofibre, moulded at 7,500 N/cm² and 2,000 °C for physical and chemical stability. It is a movement component, distinct from the case material, and the two should not be conflated.
  • Titanium column wheelThe chronograph runs on a column wheel in titanium, operated by the pusher at 8 o’clock and reset from the pusher at 10 o’clock. Producing the column wheel and levers in titanium reduces inertia and lowers energy consumption by circa 50%.
  • Unidirectional bezelThe bezel turns in one direction only and is held by a screw system attaching it to the case, so it cannot be loosened or dislocated inadvertently.
  • Function indicatorA hand at 4 o’clock shows W, N or H — winding, neutral or hand-setting — when the crown is drawn out.
  • Torque indicatorPositioned to the right of the movement’s barrel, reporting the tension of the mainspring; the power-reserve indication sits to the left.
  • Kalrez® strapThe strap is perfluoroelastomer Kalrez®, manufactured by Biwi SA, which resists absorption of chemicals and foreign matter and tolerates temperature change.
  • Movement finishingHand polishing, sapphire-blasted surfaces, chamfering, circular finishing and burnishing.
