All-titanium execution of the carbon nanofibre pocket watch
The RM 020, introduced in 2008, is Richard Mille’s pocket watch. This record is the titanium execution: the caseband is titanium, as on every RM 020, and the front and back bezels are titanium rather than the 18ct white or red gold offered as alternatives. The rectangular case measures 62.00 × 52.00 × 15.60 mm.
The watch was the first pocket watch built on a carbon nanofibre baseplate, an isotropic composite moulded at 7,500 N/cm² and 2,000 °C. Two directly coupled winding barrels give circa ten days of power reserve, read on a numeric scale between 9 and 10 o’clock.

Design and engineering
- Carbon nanofibre baseplateAn isotropic composite moulded under 7,500 N/cm² at 2,000 °C, amorphous and chemically neutral, dimensionally constant across a wide temperature range. The ribbed perimeter of the plate maintains rigidity between plate and bridges. The material originates in US Air Force jet applications.
- Double barrelTwo directly coupled barrels supply circa ten days of running, indicated numerically between 9 and 10 o’clock.
- Free-sprung balance with overcoil springThe overcoil construction, developed originally for pocket watches, improves reliability under shock and during assembly and disassembly.
- Barrel pawl with progressive recoilThe pawl produces a winding gain of around 20%, chiefly at the start of winding, and distributes mainspring tension evenly.
- Crown by Cheval FrèresThe crown is torque-limiting and prevents overwinding. The function selector is read from a hand at 4 o’clock.
- Chain and standSupplied with a titanium chain incorporating a fast release and attach mechanism, and a stand allowing use as a desk clock.
