Overview
Pocket watch with a carbon nanofibre baseplate and two coupled barrels
The RM 020, introduced in 2008, is Richard Mille’s pocket watch. Its rectangular case measures 62.00 × 52.00 × 15.60 mm, with a titanium caseband and front and back bezels offered in titanium, 18ct white gold or 18ct red gold; this record is the red gold execution.
It was the first pocket watch built on a carbon nanofibre baseplate — an isotropic composite moulded at 7,500 N/cm² and 2,000 °C, dimensionally stable across a wide temperature range and chemically neutral. The tourbillon is driven by two directly coupled winding barrels giving circa ten days of power reserve, read on a numeric scale between 9 and 10 o’clock. The watch is supplied with a titanium chain with a quick release mechanism and a matching stand for desk use.
Key details
Design and engineering
- Carbon nanofibre baseplateAn isotropic composite moulded under 7,500 N/cm² of pressure at 2,000 °C, amorphous and chemically neutral, with dimensional stability across a wide temperature range. The ribbed perimeter of the plate holds rigidity between plate and bridges. The material originates in US Air Force jet applications.
- Double barrelTwo directly coupled winding barrels supply circa ten days of running, indicated numerically between 9 and 10 o’clock.
- Free-sprung balance with overcoil springThe overcoil spring, a construction originally developed for pocket watches, improves reliability under shock and during assembly.
- Barrel pawl with progressive recoilThe pawl yields a winding gain of around 20%, particularly at the start of winding, and distributes mainspring tension evenly.
- Crown by Cheval FrèresThe crown was made by Cheval Frères and is torque-limiting, preventing overwinding. The function selector is read from a hand at 4 o’clock.
- Chain and standA titanium chain with a fast release and attach mechanism is supplied, along with a stand allowing the watch to be used as a desk clock.
