Overview
Split-seconds chronograph
Introduced in 2003, the RM 004 is Richard Mille’s split-seconds (rattrapante) chronograph, allowing two intervals to be timed simultaneously — one hand stopped to read a split while the second continues.
The calibre comprises 383 components, of which 230 are unique to it. The dial carries a 30-minute totaliser, small seconds, a power-reserve display, a torque indicator showing mainspring tension, and a W–N–H function indicator.

Design and engineering
- Column-wheel split-secondsThe geometry of the column wheels controlling the levers was developed to maintain stable, simultaneous operation over the long term.
- Reduced energy consumptionA revised generation of split-seconds components reduced friction on the spindle, decreasing the energy drawn from the movement by approximately 50%.
- Titanium gear wheels and leversManufactured in titanium to reduce inertia, substantially removing the initial jump of the chronograph seconds hand on start.
- Torque indicatorDisplays the force the mainspring is delivering, separately from the power-reserve display which shows remaining energy.
- Function selectorA pusher in the centre of the crown selects winding, neutral or hand-setting, indicated at 3 o’clock.
- Chronograph controlsStart and stop at 8 o’clock, reset at 10 o’clock, split-seconds at 4 o’clock.
