Overview
An alarm and a second time zone, in a water-resistant case
The Patek Philippe Alarm Travel Time, reference 5520RG-001, in rose gold with four white gold pusher tubes and a sunburst grey dial, on a chestnut calfskin strap; self-winding calibre AL 30-660 S C FUS with 24-hour alarm; 42.2 mm, 11.6 mm high. Patek Philippe no longer lists the reference in its current collection.
The reference 5520RG-001 is the two-tone execution of Patek Philippe's Alarm Travel Time, reference 5520: a rose gold case with four pusher tubes in white gold, 42.2 mm across and 11.6 mm high, around a sunburst grey dial. Patek Philippe pairs two things in it: its Travel Time system, with a second time zone and the date indexed to local time, and a 24-hour alarm that strikes a hammer on a classic gong — the only chiming watch, the brand says, that the brand makes in a water-resistant case.
The self-winding calibre AL 30-660 S C FUS shows local time by a sword-style hand in charcoal grey white gold filled with luminescent coating and home time by a skeletonised hand of the same form, with day/night indications for each in apertures and the date coupled to local time by hand; sweep seconds run from the centre. The alarm time is shown digitally in 15-minute increments in an applied charcoal grey white gold frame with a rose-gilt outline, with its on/off and day/night states in apertures and the alarm and Travel Time functions marked on the pushers; four patents were granted for the alarm, Patek Philippe says. The movement winds through a 21K gold central rotor and measures 31 mm across and 6.6 mm high, with 574 parts and 52 jewels; it runs at 28,800 semi-oscillations an hour on a Gyromax® balance with a Spiromax® balance spring, for a power reserve of 42 to 52 hours, and carries the Patek Philippe Seal.
For collectors
Patek Philippe's own distinction is that this is its only chiming watch in a water-resistant case — the alarm strikes a hammer on a gong inside a case rated to 30 m — and its 'two-tone' is a matter of the pusher tubes: the case is rose gold and the four tubes white gold, with the alarm frame on the dial outlined in rose-gilt.
