Overview
A Calatrava with a hinged dust cover
The Patek Philippe Calatrava, reference 5227J-001, in yellow gold with a lacquered ivory dial, yellow gold trapeze-style hour markers and dauphine-style hands, on a shiny chocolate brown alligator strap. Self-winding calibre 26-330 S C with date, sweep seconds and stop-seconds, behind a hinged dust cover; 39 mm, 9.24 mm high.
The reference 5227 is the Calatrava with date and sweep seconds in a 39 mm round case, 9.24 mm high, whose sapphire crystal back is closed by a dust cover on an invisible hinge — the detail Patek Philippe singles out. The case-middle carries a fine curved scalloping that runs into the lugs.
Inside is the self-winding calibre 26-330 S C, Patek Philippe's date-and-sweep-seconds automatic: 27 mm across, 3.32 mm high, 207 parts, 30 jewels, wound by a 21K gold central rotor. Its stop-seconds function halts the seconds hand when the crown is pulled so the time can be set to the second, and the date sits in an aperture. It runs at 28,800 semi-oscillations an hour on a Gyromax® balance with a Spiromax® balance spring, for a power reserve of 35 to 45 hours, and carries the Patek Philippe Seal. The dust cover is a solid hinged back that closes over the sapphire crystal, so the movement is seen only when the cover is opened; the hinge is concealed in the case.
For collectors
The hinged dust cover is the reference's distinguishing detail: Patek Philippe describes it as protecting the sapphire crystal back, and its invisible hinge means the closed case reads as a plain solid-back watch until the cover is lifted. The case is 9.24 mm high.
Key details
Design and engineering
- Dust coverA solid hinged cover closes over the sapphire crystal case back and opens to show the movement; the hinge is invisible from outside, so the closed case reads as a plain solid back. Patek Philippe presents this as the reference's refined detail.
- CaseRound, 39 mm across and 9.24 mm high, with fine curved scalloping from the case-middle to the lugs; water-resistant to 30 m.
- DialLacquered ivory with applied faceted trapeze-style hour markers and faceted dauphine-style hands in yellow gold; Patek Philippe presents the layout as the minimalist spirit of the Calatrava.
- Stop-secondsPulling the crown stops the seconds hand, so the watch can be set against a reference to the second; the date sits in an aperture.
- Strap and buckleShiny chocolate brown alligator leather with square scales, closed by a yellow gold prong buckle.
