Overview

Hobnail on the caseband

The Patek Philippe Calatrava, reference 5226G-001, in white gold with a hobnail-guilloched caseband, textured charcoal grey dial with a black-gradient rim, white gold numerals and syringe hands with beige luminescent coating, delivered with two calfskin straps. Self-winding calibre 26-330 S C with date, sweep seconds and stop-seconds; 40 mm, 8.53 mm high.

The reference 5226G-001 is a Calatrava with date and sweep seconds in white gold, with the hobnail (Clous de Paris) guilloché cut around the full circumference of the caseband rather than on the bezel. Patek Philippe presents it as a vintage-inspired execution, and the dial carries that reading: textured charcoal grey, with a grain the brand likens to old camera cases, shading to black at the rim, with applied numerals and syringe-shaped hands in white gold, both filled with beige luminescent coating. The case is 40 mm across and 8.53 mm high, with a sapphire crystal back, water-resistant to 30 m.

The movement is the self-winding calibre 26-330 S C, Patek Philippe's date-and-sweep-seconds automatic: 27 mm across, 3.32 mm high, 207 parts and 30 jewels, wound by a 21K gold central rotor. Patek Philippe names its stop-seconds function, which halts the seconds hand when the crown is pulled so the time can be set to the second, and the date, which sits in an aperture. It runs at 28,800 semi-oscillations an hour on a Gyromax® balance with a Spiromax® balance spring, for a power reserve of 35 to 45 hours, and carries the Patek Philippe Seal. The watch is delivered with two calfskin straps — beige with a nubuck finish, fitted, and black with a fabric pattern and contrasting beige stitching — on a white gold prong buckle.

For collectors

The two straps are part of the delivery, not an option: Patek Philippe lists the beige nubuck as originally fitted and the black fabric-pattern calfskin as the additional strap, so a complete example should have both. The beige luminescent coating on the numerals and hands is what Patek Philippe ties to the vintage reading of the dial.

Design and engineering

  • Hobnail casebandThe caseband is guilloched with the hobnail (Clous de Paris) pattern around its entire circumference, so the decoration sits on the flank of the 40 mm white gold case rather than on the bezel. Sapphire crystal case back, water-resistant to 30 m, 8.53 mm high.
  • DialTextured charcoal grey with a black-gradient rim, a grain Patek Philippe compares to vintage camera cases; applied numerals and syringe-shaped hands in white gold, both with beige luminescent coating.
  • Stop-secondsPulling the crown stops the seconds hand, so the watch can be set against a reference to the second; the date sits in an aperture.
  • Two strapsDelivered with a beige nubuck-finish calfskin strap, originally fitted, and a black calfskin strap with a fabric pattern and contrasting beige stitching; white gold prong buckle.
