Engraving and enamel on a Calatrava
The Patek Philippe Calatrava, reference 5088/100P-001, in platinum with hand-engraved, black-enamelled flanks and 18K gold dial, white gold dauphine hands and a diamond at 6 o'clock, on a hand-stitched black alligator strap. Patek Philippe no longer lists this reference in its current collection. Ultra-thin self-winding calibre 240; 38 mm, 8.3 mm high.
The reference 5088/100P-001 is a platinum Calatrava whose decoration is done by hand: the 18K gold dial plate and the flanks of the case are engraved with volutes and arabesques and then enamelled in black, in the technique Patek Philippe names as champlevé, and the prong buckle is hand-engraved to match. The case is 38 mm across and 8.3 mm high, with a diamond set at 6 o'clock and a sapphire crystal back, on a hand-stitched shiny black alligator strap.
Champlevé enamel — Patek Philippe's name for the technique — is enamel laid into cells cut out of the metal, so the engraved gold left standing reads against the black ground; here the same treatment runs from the dial onto the flanks of the platinum case. Inside is the self-winding calibre 240, which Patek Philippe calls ultra-thin: 27.5 mm across, 2.53 mm high, 152 parts and 27 jewels, wound by a 22K gold minirotor set off-centre and recessed into the movement, running at 21,600 semi-oscillations an hour on a Gyromax® balance with a Spiromax® balance spring, with a power reserve of at least 48 hours and the Patek Philippe Seal. The case is water-resistant to 30 m.
For collectors
The engraving is not confined to the dial: Patek Philippe lists the case flanks and the buckle as hand-engraved too, so the decoration reads on three components, and a complete example carries the matching engraved buckle. The dial has hours and minutes only, with white gold dauphine-style hands over the black enamel.
