Overview
Macaws in cloisonné enamel, set with stones
The Patek Philippe dome table clock Macaws, reference 22000M-001, a unique piece in Grand Feu cloisonné enamel with miniature painting, macaws among strelitzia, 1,140 diamonds on the hour circle, 225 sapphires, 92 tsavorites, 87 topazes on the case; 213.5 mm high, 128 mm wide, on the calibre 17''' PEND DOME rewound by an electric motor.
The reference 22000M-001 is a dome table clock from Patek Philippe's Rare Handcrafts collection, a unique piece whose panels show macaws in flight through the Amazon forest among strelitzia, the bird-of-paradise flowers. It is worked in Grand Feu cloisonné enamel and set throughout with coloured stones and diamonds; Patek Philippe presents it as the first gem-set table clock the Manufacture has made.
The birds, their plumage and the strelitzia were outlined in about 20.75 m of gold wire (around 39 g), and the cells filled with 48 colours of enamel, mostly opaque with some semi-opaque and transparent, with 4 colours of miniature painting on enamel for the finest feathers. Each enamelled plate went through 8 to 10 firings at 800°C to 820°C. Patek Philippe gives the setting component by component: the hour circle is snow-set with 1,140 diamonds (13.82 cts) and carries 24 baguette-cut applied hour markers — 12 black spinels (1.68 cts), 6 multicoloured sapphires (0.72 ct), 2 tsavorites (0.24 ct) and 4 topazes (0.48 ct) — around a cloisonné centre showing a macaw in flight; the dome case is set with 225 multicoloured sapphires (24.75 cts), 92 tsavorites (9.27 cts) and 87 topazes (8.48 cts); and the feet with 570 diamonds (6.7 cts). Patek Philippe's own total is 1,710 diamonds (20.52 cts). The clock is driven by the calibre 17''' PEND DOME, a mechanical movement rewound by an electric motor.
For collectors
Patek Philippe calls it the first gem-set table clock the manufacture has produced, and counts the stones by component — 1,140 diamonds on the hour circle alone in snow-setting, which sets stones of varied sizes edge to edge so that no metal shows — and gives a total of 1,710 diamonds (20.52 cts) beside 225 sapphires, 92 tsavorites and 87 topazes on the case.
