Overview
A day jungle in Longwy enamel on faience
The Patek Philippe dome table clock Jungle by Day, reference 20218M-001, a unique piece in Longwy enamel on faience after an Art Deco vase, a stylised forest in daylight, 12 gold-enamel markers on crackled white; 221.2 mm high, 126 mm wide, on the calibre 17''' PEND DOME rewound by an electric motor.
The reference 20218M-001 is a dome table clock from Patek Philippe's Rare Handcrafts collection, a unique piece after an Art Deco vase, whose panels show the vegetation of a tropical forest in full daylight, in stylised form. The technique is Longwy enamel on faience, which Patek Philippe describes as rare and names after the French town it comes from; the clock is the daylight companion to Jungle by Night.
The design was laid out on a bisque ground by drawing its black outline, the cerne, and the shapes filled with opaque enamels in 5 colours, some of them the special tints that undercoat the metals and raise a slight relief. Two highlighting pigments in platinum and gold tints were then brushed on to light the foliage. After the firings a colourant was applied to bring up the fine crackle that marks Longwy work. Each enamelled plate needed 5 firings, at temperatures falling from 1020°C to 745°C. The hour circle is white and finely crackled, with 12 baton-style hour markers painted in gold enamel and gilt leaf-shaped hands, and the round enamelled foot takes the geometric motif of a Native American bracelet. The clock is driven by the calibre 17''' PEND DOME, a mechanical movement rewound by an electric motor.
