Invisibly set stones around a flying tourbillon
The Jacob & Co. Brilliant Flying Tourbillon, reference BT546.30.AD.UA.A, in an 18-carat white gold case, 47 mm across and 14.65 mm high. Its case is invisibly set with yellow and orange sapphires and its dial with white diamonds, on a white alligator leather strap with an 18-carat white gold butterfly deployant buckle. This version is limited to 18 pieces.
Yellow and orange sapphires are set on the case, and white diamonds on the dial, crown, buckle and movement. The 170 sapphires total ≈20.55 ct and the 507 white diamonds ≈15.85 ct.
Jacob & Co. introduced the Brilliant collection for women in 2017. The cases are round and have no lugs, and the strap is fixed directly to the case. The case is shaped like a pebble, and Jacob & Co. says its rounded edges give the collection its brilliance. Jacob & Co. says it sets stones only by the invisible technique, so no prongs or visible metal interrupt the surface.
Hand-wound calibre JCBM01 shows its one-minute flying tourbillon through an opening in the dial. The carriage is held only from its base, so there is no upper bridge. The movement is set with 338 brilliant-cut white diamonds, seen through the caseback. Setting stones on bridges is delicate work, because the pressure can bend the parts.
