Overview
The finishing standard, named
The Greubel Forsey Balancier QM, from the Balancier collection, in white gold, 39.6 mm and 12.25 mm high. Hours, minutes, small seconds and power reserve on a manually wound movement of 298 parts, the first the brand finishes under the Qualité Musée name; 33 timepieces.
The Balancier QM is the first Greubel Forsey watch to carry the name Qualité Musée. The brand's account is that since 2004 it has finished every watch to one level by hand without ever naming it; with this watch the standard is named, and a research group inside its Experimental Watch Technology Laboratory is given the job of taking it further. It is a 39.6 mm white gold watch, made in 33 pieces, with hours, minutes, small seconds and a power reserve.
Under a high-domed sapphire crystal the movement is built in levels: the escapement low in the architecture, the small seconds on a plane above it, the barrel below, and flame-blued steel hands and the chapter ring on top. The power-reserve hand runs hidden beneath that ring and reappears on a sector to show 72 hours. The balance is the brand's own 12.6 mm wheel, with a hairspring made inside the Atelier from the raw material up, and can be stopped for setting. Every one of the 298 parts is finished to the same standard, the hidden ones included: the steel parts permanently under the bridges are flat black-polished, and the winding work on the back is finished as if it sat on the dial side.
For collectors
The name appears once on the watch, on a plate engraved Qualité Musée inside the movement, not on the dial. The point the brand makes is that the finishing does not change with visibility — the reverse of the escape wheel is bevelled and polished like the front, and the anchor's ruby pallets are convex so that light runs along the stone. What is bought is the standard rather than a display of it.
Key details
Design and engineering
- Seven finishes on one bridgeThe balance bridge, a few millimetres of steel, carries seven hand techniques — barrel polishing, spotting, circular graining and hand-polished bevels among them. It is the brand's example of the standard in one part.
- Bi-level escape wheelBevelled and polished on both faces, the hidden one as carefully as the visible, with the anchor's convex ruby pallets: the escapement is finished as a component to be looked at, not only to run.
- Layered architectureEscapement, small seconds, barrel and hands sit on different planes, so the movement reads in depth through the domed crystal rather than as a flat dial.
- Power reserveThe reserve hand travels unseen under the chapter ring and surfaces on a sector for its 72-hour display.
- In-house regulating organA 12.6 mm balance with a hairspring made in the Atelier from raw material; a stop-balance lets the seconds be set exactly.
- CaseWhite gold, 39.6 mm and 12.25 mm high, water-resistant to 30 m.
