Overview
The last Balancier Contemporain
The Greubel Forsey Balancier Contemporain, from the Balancier collection, in stainless steel, 39.6 mm and 12.25 mm high, with a layered gold dial and sunburst blue hour ring. Hours, minutes, small seconds and power reserve on a manually wound movement of 256 components. The final edition of 33, delivered in 2025; sold out.
The Balancier Contemporain was Greubel Forsey's compact watch: the brand's account is that it was introduced to give the full Greubel Forsey construction in a 39.6 mm case. This stainless steel execution is its final edition, 33 pieces built and delivered in 2025, after which the calibre is retired. The brand lists it as sold out.
A high-domed sapphire crystal covers a gold dial built in layers, with a sunburst blue hour ring and blue indications. The 12.6 mm in-house balance hangs above a flat, black-polished gold plate. The movement has 256 hand-finished components: nickel silver bridges frosted and spotted by hand, steel flat black-polished, jewels in gold chatons with polished countersinks, and, as the brand states of all its watches, the surfaces the wearer never sees finished the same way. Four hands — hours, minutes, small seconds and power reserve — on a manually wound movement with 72 hours of reserve.
For collectors
Steel is unusual for the brand — its own word for the case is rare — and the 2025 run closes the calibre: Greubel Forsey says the design moves on to smaller-diameter watches after it, so the reference is fixed at 33 pieces.
Key details
Design and engineering
- Layered gold dialA gold dial built in levels with a sunburst blue hour ring, under a high-domed crystal, so the indications sit at different depths rather than on one surface.
- Suspended balanceThe 12.6 mm balance is held above a flat, black-polished gold plate that mirrors it; black polish is the finish that shows any flaw, so it is where the standard is checked.
- 256 hand-finished componentsFrosted and spotted nickel silver bridges, flat black-polished steel, gold chatons with polished countersinks — applied to hidden surfaces as well as visible ones.
- CaseStainless steel, 39.6 mm and 12.25 mm high, water-resistant to 30 m.
