The constant-force tourbillon in ruthenium
The F.P. Journe Tourbillon Souverain, reference T, from the limited Ruthenium series, in platinum on a leather strap with the ruthenium on gold and whitened guilloché silver dial. 40 mm and 9.9 mm high, manually wound on calibre 1498: a tourbillon with constant force, hours and minutes at 3 o'clock, power reserve at 10.
The Ruthenium Tourbillon Souverain was produced between 2001 and 2005 as a limited series numbered 1 to 99, in a 40 mm platinum case with a dial of ruthenium on gold and whitened guilloché silver. It runs on calibre 1498, a manually wound tourbillon with constant force.
The tourbillon turns the escapement and balance in a rotating cage to average out the rate errors that gravity causes in the vertical positions. The constant-force device deals with the other main source of error, the mainspring's falling torque: a secondary spring, rewound from the mainspring, drives the escapement with a near-steady force. Hours and minutes are read on a subdial at 3 o'clock and the power reserve at 10.
For collectors
F.P. Journe's amplitude figures show the constant-force device doing its work: 280° dial-up at full wind, and still 280° after 24 hours.
