A ruby dial on the remontoir tourbillon
The F.P. Journe Tourbillon Souverain Cœur de Rubis, reference TN, in platinum on a leather strap, with the heart of ruby dial and guilloché silver sub-dials with a black gold coating, blued and ivory-coloured steel hands. 40 mm and 9.9 mm high, manually wound calibre 1403: tourbillon, remontoir and deadbeat seconds.
The Tourbillon Souverain Cœur de Rubis was made in 2019 and 2020 in an exclusive production of 20 pieces. Its model history begins in 1999, when François-Paul Journe launched his brand with the Tourbillon Souverain, which F.P. Journe describes as the only tourbillon wristwatch with a remontoir. In 2004 he replaced it with a new construction that added deadbeat seconds; by the brand's account only about a hundred of the first version were made. This edition carries the 2004 construction in a 40 mm platinum case with a sapphire back.
The remontoir, or constant-force device, is a small spring rewound in short spurts by the mainspring and used to drive the escapement, so that the force reaching the balance does not follow the mainspring's decline. The deadbeat seconds are independent: the hand stays still until a full second has passed, then jumps, so it shows each second only once it has elapsed. Calibre 1403 is hand-wound, in 18K rose gold, with a free-sprung balance on a flat Anachron spring with Breguet overcoil. Hours and minutes are read at 3 o'clock, the seconds at 6 and the 42-hour reserve at 12.
For collectors
The dial is two pieces of heart of ruby, each 0.45 mm thick, on a rhodium-plated brass plate, made by F.P. Journe's own dialmakers, Les Cadraniers de Genève. Because the stone is natural, no two dials are alike, and the brand counts it among the most difficult dials they have produced, for its thinness.

- Remontoir d'égalitéThe escapement is driven by a spring the mainspring rewinds at intervals, not by the mainspring itself, so the force at the escapement stays even as the mainspring runs down. F.P. Journe values it for its timekeeping.
- Deadbeat secondsAn independent seconds system: the hand moves once a second in a single step and stands still in between.
- TourbillonThe escapement turns in a cage to average out the rate errors of different positions. The balance is free-sprung, with four inertia weights, and the lever has a 90° anchor fork.
- DialSteel circles screwed to the face, a patented feature of F.P. Journe chronometers; the hour, minute and seconds dials are guilloché silver with a black gold coating, set in the heart of ruby.
