Moon phase on the Octa base
The F.P. Journe Octa Lune, reference L, in platinum on a leather strap with the 18K yellow gold dial and whitened guilloché silver subdials. 38 mm and 10.6 mm high, self-winding on the Octa calibre 1300, with a moon phase in 18-carat gold on blue, a large date and the power reserve.
F.P. Journe produced the Octa Lune between 2003 and 2005. The brand frames the moon phase as a complication kept for its poetry rather than for need, a reminder of the time when a full moon was the only light for travelling at night. On the Octa base it sits with a power reserve on the left, the date at 12 o'clock and off-centre hours and minutes.
Beneath the dial is the self-winding Octa calibre. Journe's account of it starts from the spring: adding a wheel to stretch a small mainspring, he explains, leaves the balance short of energy, so he lengthened the spring itself and fitted it on the same level as the train and escapement. Its low torque lets the off-centre rotor, winding in both directions, fill it quickly.
For collectors
The dial is assembled rather than printed. The hour, minute and seconds indications are guilloché silver subdials, each fixed to the 18-carat gold dial with a steel ring, and the moon and stars are 18-carat gold on a blue ground, which the brand matches to the blued hands of its chronometers.
