The Octa calibre
The F.P. Journe Octa Réserve de Marche, reference A, in platinum on a leather strap with the 5N gold and whitened guilloché silver dial. 38 mm and 10.6 mm high, self-winding on the Octa calibre 1300, with off-centre hours and minutes, a large date and the power reserve at 7:30.
The Octa Réserve de Marche was produced between 2001 and 2005 and shows what the Octa calibre was built for: time, a large date and a long reserve. F.P. Journe calls it the first self-winding mechanical movement with a power reserve of more than 120 hours. Journe's account puts three years of research and development behind the calibre, which then took each complication of the collection at the same size.
Journe's argument starts from the mainspring. The usual way to lengthen a watch's running time, he explains, is to add a wheel to the train, but the energy then reaching the balance is low, which led makers to fit smaller and less stable balances. He enlarged the spring itself instead and fitted it on the same level as the train and escapement. Because its torque is low the rotor winds it quickly: he gives an hour and a half on a Chappuis cyclotest for more than five days of running.
For collectors
F.P. Journe's headline figure is a power reserve of more than 120 hours. Its specification gives the balance amplitude as 280° dial-up at full wind and 220° at 120 hours, and the total reserve as 160 ± 12 hours.
