Central hands on the Octa
The F.P. Journe Octa Divine 36 mm, reference D, in platinum on a leather strap with the 18K yellow gold and whitened silver dial. 36 mm and 10.6 mm high, self-winding on the Octa calibre 1300, with central hours and minutes, a large date, the power reserve and a moon phase.
The Octa Divine in 36 mm was produced in 2003 and 2004. F.P. Journe describes it as its first model set with diamonds and its first with central hours and minutes, while keeping features of the collection it counts as recognisable: small seconds at lower right, and subdials screwed to the dial, a construction the brand has patented.
It runs on the self-winding Octa calibre. Besides central hours and minutes it shows small seconds at 4:30, a large date, the power reserve at 7:30 and the phase of the moon, which is stepped from the date. The movement winds in both directions through an off-centre rotor, and the slipping mainspring releases at full wind rather than being overstrained.
For collectors
Journe's case for the Octa calibre starts from the spring. Adding a wheel to stretch a small mainspring, he explains, leaves little energy at the balance, which pushed makers towards smaller and less stable balances. He lengthened the spring itself instead and fitted it on the same level as the train and escapement; its low torque is also why the rotor winds it quickly.

Design and engineering
- Moon phaseThe moon is carried on a metallic sapphire disc that moves forward one notch each time the date changes, so the phase advances with the calendar.
- Large dateThe date changes instantaneously. The crown sets it in position 2, turned one way or the other, and sets the time in position 3.
- BalanceFree-sprung, with four inertia weights, a flat Anachron microflamed spring laser-welded to a Nivatronic collet, a mobile stud holder and a pinned stud.
- FinishingCircular stripes on the bridges, partly circular-grained base plate, polished screw heads with chamfered slots, pegs with polished rounded ends, steelwork with polished chamfers and straight graining.
