The Octa at twenty
The F.P. Journe Automatique, reference AN, in platinum on a leather strap, with the 18K yellow gold and guilloché silver dial and blued steel hands. 40 mm and 10.70 mm high, self-winding calibre 1300.3 in rhodium-plated brass, with off-centre hours and minutes, small seconds, large date and power reserve.
F.P. Journe presented its Octa automatic movement in 2001 and says it has changed only three times since; the latest change moved the winding from bi-directional to unidirectional, which tensions the long barrel spring faster. For the calibre's 20th anniversary the brand issued the Automatique as a limited series of 99 pieces for those who remember the early years: a 40 mm platinum case, calibre 1300.3 in rhodium-plated brass, and a satin-finished yellow gold dial like those of 2001, when François-Paul Journe finished them by hand.
The Octa's principle, in Journe's account, is a long mainspring set on the same level as the gear train and escapement, so that the run is extended by the spring itself. Its low torque also makes automatic winding quick; the rotor is off-centre, in 22K 5N gold. The dial reads off-centre hours and minutes with small seconds, a large date at 11:30 and the power reserve at 8:30. For this series the reserve indicator was moved down to make room for a larger date window, now 4.7 × 2.6 mm, and the hour and minute numerals were enlarged.
For collectors
The series looks back to 2001 in its materials, a platinum case, yellow gold dial and brass movement, and forward in its mechanics: the unidirectional winding belongs to the calibre's latest evolution, and the series has a larger date window. The one visible change to the movement itself is its openwork bridges.

Design and engineering
- Long-running mainspringAdding a wheel to the train lengthens the run but, in Journe's account, leaves too little energy at the balance, which then has to be made smaller and less stable. He extended the spring's capacity instead, so the balance keeps its size.
- Unidirectional windingThe off-centre rotor winds in one direction only, the change F.P. Journe made in the calibre's latest evolution because it tensions the long spring more quickly.
- Free-sprung balanceFour adjustable inertia weights, an Anachron flat spring laser-soldered with Nivatronic, a mobile stud holder and a slipping mainspring.
- Instantaneous dateThe large date changes instantaneously. The crown's second position corrects it, anti-clockwise; the third sets the time.
- Brass movementRhodium-plated base plate and bridges, graining on the plate, circular Côtes de Genève on the bridges, golden engravings, and openwork bridges for this series.
