A chronometer for Beirut
The F.P. Journe Chronomètre Bleu Byblos, reference CB BYBLOS, in tantalum on a leather strap, with the cut-out dial and Mediterranean blue hour circle in Western Arabic numerals, ivory-coloured steel hands. 39 mm and 8.3 mm high, manually wound calibre 1304 in 18K rose gold.
F.P. Journe made the Chronomètre Bleu Byblos for the opening of its tenth boutique, in Beirut, and named it after the Phoenician port a few kilometres north of the city. It was produced in 2014 and 2015 in a series numbered 1 to 99. The brand says it was the first time it used a cut-out dial, opened to show the guilloché-decorated rose gold movement inside a Mediterranean blue hour circle. The case is tantalum, a metal F.P. Journe notes is rarely used in watchmaking because its hardness makes it difficult to work.
The movement is calibre 1304, hand-wound, in 18K rose gold. Two barrels run in parallel, as in traditional precision watches, to keep the power uniform for most of the 56-hour reserve, and the balance is free-sprung, regulated by four inertia weights with a flat Anachron spring. Central hours and minutes are read against the blue ring, with small seconds at 7:30. On the movement, the J of the F.P. Journe signature is written as the Phoenician letter yodh.
For collectors
The yodh was chosen for its number: it is the tenth letter, with a numerical value of 10, and the brand took it as the symbol of its tenth boutique. The two dials differ only in the script of the numerals on the blue ring, Western or Eastern Arabic.
