Overview
The bust of Akhenaten, carved in Sinai sandstone
The Vacheron Constantin Métiers d'Art Tribute to Great Civilisations – Buste d'Akhénaton, reference 7620A/000G-H078, in 18K white gold with a Sinai sandstone glyptic of Akhenaten and a turquoise frieze, on a blue alligator strap. Self-winding calibre 2460 G4/2 with hours, minutes, day and date by aperture; 42 mm, 12.93 mm high, Hallmark of Geneva certified.
The reference 7620A/000G-H078 is one of four Métiers d'Art pieces in Vacheron Constantin's second Tribute to Great Civilisations series, made with the Louvre Museum's curators and reproducing a work from its Department of Antiquities as a dial-mounted applique; the brand describes each piece as a limited edition, without stating a number. This piece is built in 18K white gold around the Bust of Akhenaten: a glyptic applique carved from Sinai sandstone with a hand-applied patina, facing the pharaoh's own cartouche, engraved on a matching piece of sandstone and drawn from a wall relief at Karnak. The outer frieze, drawn from the necklace worn by the courtier Nakhti, is drypoint-engraved into a single ring of turquoise; the inner frieze is worked in stone champlevé, its elements set into a ground of finely engraved gold thread. The case is 42 mm across and 12.93 mm high, on a blue alligator leather strap closed by an 18K white gold triple folding clasp.
The movement is the self-winding calibre 2460 G4/2, 6.05 mm high with 237 parts and 27 jewels, running at 28,800 V.P.H. (4 Hz) for a stated 40-hour power reserve; hours, minutes, day and date are shown by aperture rather than by hands, alongside a balance-stop function. The watch is certified to the Hallmark of Geneva, which the brand's own account dates to 1886, when the Republic and Canton of Geneva introduced the mark as a guarantee of quality workmanship.
For collectors
The outer frieze is engraved into a single piece of turquoise rather than assembled from several stones, which the page states directly - worth checking against the other three artworks in this series, whose friezes use different settings.
