Overview
A movement designed for a sapphire case
The RM 75-01 Flying Tourbillon Sapphire was introduced in April 2025 as a set of three limited editions. Richard Mille made its first all-sapphire case in 2012; what is new here is that the movement was conceived FOR the sapphire case from the start rather than adapted to it.
The calibre carries a flying tourbillon at 6 o’clock and a flying barrel, both assembled without upper bridges so that they appear suspended. Cécile Guenat’s team drew on Gothic ribbed vaults for the flange and structure, and on water for the colours: the clear version is paired with a sea-green strap, and two further versions add a coloured lower bezel in lilac or blue.
The photograph shows the BLUE execution — a pale blue sapphire case with a deeper blue lower bezel — with the red gold flange visible inside, a gem-set blue crown and a white strap. That version is limited to 10 pieces.
Key details
Design and engineering
- Calibre RM75-01Manual winding flying tourbillon movement with hours and minutes, running at 21,600 vph (3 Hz) with around 65 hours (± 10%) of power reserve.
- Flying tourbillon and flying barrelBoth are assembled without upper bridges. Richard Mille specifies the arrangement for weightlessness and for unobstructed visibility through the movement.
- Skeletonised baseplate and bridgesGrade 5 titanium, treated in 5N gold and grey PVD. The multilevel baseplate anchors the wheels, tourbillon and barrel; the wheels are rhodium treated.
- Free-sprung balance with variable inertiaThe regulator index is eliminated in favour of four adjustable screws on the balance.
- Winding-barrel teeth and third-wheel pinion with a central involute profileGiving an optimal pressure angle of 20°, which Richard Mille specifies for torque transmission and for compensating variations in the engagement of the going train.
- Sapphire caseBezel, caseband and caseback are milled from solid blocks of synthetic sapphire, a material second only to diamond in hardness. Richard Mille records over 1,000 hours of machining and polishing per case, of which around 430 hours are preforming and 350 hours polishing, with anti-glare treatment on both faces of the front and back crystals. The coloured sapphire is produced by introducing metallic oxides into the crystal structure, a process requiring precise control of temperature and growth rate.
- Upper flange5N red gold, microblasted, resting on satin-polished titanium pillars, with polished and microblasted steel markers and luminous index points.
