Overview
Diamond spiral over black onyx with white-gold case
Introduced in 2015, the RM 51-02 Diamond Twister takes its form from a twisting spiral — a shape that recurs in the natural world and is associated with harmonic proportion. Fourteen diamond-set rays extend from the tourbillon at 6 o’clock across the dial architecture, a figure Richard Mille associates equally with the vortex of a galaxy, the whirlwind that gives the tourbillon its French name, and the spiral growth patterns found in shells and plants.
The manually wound RM51-02 calibre provides hours, minutes and power-reserve indication. Its BASEPLATE is black onyx, a cryptocrystalline quartz chalcedony of silicon dioxide — not the case, which is 18K white gold set with white diamonds and accented with black sapphires. The bridges are skeletonised, PVD-treated grade 5 titanium, and the strap is black.
Production was limited to 30 pieces.
Key details
Design and engineering
- Calibre RM51-02The manually wound tourbillon movement provides hours, minutes and power-reserve indication with approximately 48 hours of autonomy.
- Fourteen diamond-set raysFourteen rays extend from the tourbillon at 6 o’clock, forming the Diamond Twister dial architecture; the setting follows that geometry rather than the case outline.
- Black onyx baseplateThe movement is constructed on a baseplate of true black onyx, distinct from the striped varieties that belong to the agate family. It is the BASEPLATE; a dealer description placing the onyx in the case is wrong.
- Tourbillon at 6 o’clockSited at the origin of the spiral rather than at the centre of the movement.
- PVD-treated titanium bridgesThe skeletonised bridges are produced from grade 5 titanium with PVD treatment and hand-finished surfaces.
- White diamonds and black sapphiresThe white-gold case is set with white diamonds, with black sapphires used to accentuate parts of the case construction.
- Torque-limiting crownThe crown incorporates a torque-limiting mechanism to reduce the risk of excessive winding force.
- Sapphire casebackThe reverse of the movement is visible.
