Overview
Grade 5 titanium skull calibre with dark gemstone setting
Introduced in 2012, the RM 052 incorporates its skull directly into the movement structure. The skull forms the grade 5 titanium baseplate and bridges; its upper and lower jaws support the ruby of the tourbillon cage, while the rear of the skull forms the movement’s centre bridge. Four further bridges connect the movement to the case.
On this execution the bezel carries rows of black stones across its upper and lower faces, and the skull inside is paved with white diamonds, with black stones outlining the eye sockets and the nasal cavity and baguette-cut stones set at the teeth. The RM 052’s characteristic cut-away bezel is retained beneath the setting. The strap is grey rubber.
The "Black Sapphire" of the reference names the stones, not the case: the case metal is brushed and light in tone, and which metal it is has not been established. The RM 052 ran to 21 pieces in total: 15 in titanium and six individual gem-set pieces in red or white gold. The six gem-set watches are individual pieces rather than a sub-edition of six identical ones.
Key details
Design and engineering
- Skull baseplate and bridgesThe grade 5 titanium skull forms functional elements of the calibre rather than a separate decorative component. The skeletonised baseplate and bridges were tested to confirm their strength after being cut to that shape.
- Tourbillon supportThe upper and lower jaws of the skull hold the ruby bearing of the tourbillon cage, so the escapement sits in the skull’s mouth.
- Centre bridgeThe rear section of the skull forms the movement’s centre bridge and is visible through the sapphire caseback.
- Crossed-bone bridgesFour bridges connect the movement to the case and follow a crossed-bone geometry.
- Black sapphire settingRows of black stones across the upper and lower bezel. The "Black Sapphire" of the reference names these STONES — the case is metal, not sapphire.
- Diamond-set skullPaved in white diamonds, with black stones outlining the eye sockets and nasal cavity and baguette cuts at the teeth.
- Opened case constructionThe RM 052 uses openings machined into the bezel and caseback, with hand-polished chamfers and case pillars. The cut-away bezel is kept here beneath the setting — the quick check that separates an RM 052 from an RM 52-01.
- Carbon and titanium flangesThe upper flange is carbon and the lower flange is grade 5 titanium with DLC treatment.
