Under 40 grams including the strap, and the first watch in graphene
Made with McLaren, the RM 50-03 weighed less than 40 grams complete with its strap and was the lightest mechanical chronograph ever built at its release. It is limited to 75 pieces.
The case introduced Graph TPT™ — graphene — to watchmaking, from research at the National Graphene Institute founded at the University of Manchester in 2015. Graphene is six times lighter and two hundred times stronger than steel, and was used to lower the density of the carbon composite while raising its resistance.

Design and engineering
- Graph TPT™Carbon TPT® is built from 600 parallel filaments a maximum of 30 microns thick. For the RM 50-03 those filaments are impregnated with a matrix charged with graphene, laid by a CNC machine that shifts the fibre orientation 45° between layers, then solidified at 120 °C under 6 bar. The work was done with the University of Manchester, McLaren Applied Technologies and North Thin Ply Technology.
- Tourbillon split-seconds chronographThe most complex format Richard Mille builds, with a 30-minute totaliser and power-reserve, torque and function indicators.
- Torque indicatorDisplays the tension of the mainspring, so that the wearer can see when the barrel is delivering power within its optimal band.
- Function indicatorShows the crown’s selected mode.
- Weight reductionThe under-40-gram figure covers the COMPLETE WATCH INCLUDING THE STRAP, not the movement alone.
- ValidationControl and validation testing was carried out by McLaren Applied Technologies.
