Overview
Gem-set red gold with black onyx baseplate and diamond phoenix
Introduced in 2011, the RM 051 Phoenix was Richard Mille’s first collaboration with Michelle Yeoh, who was closely involved in the design. The manually wound RM051 calibre combines hours, minutes, a tourbillon and a power-reserve indicator.
The movement is built on a black onyx baseplate. A diamond-set phoenix surrounds and integrates with the movement architecture around the barrel, the power-reserve display and the tourbillon, rather than sitting over it as a dial element. This execution is cased in red gold, gem-set across the bezel and caseband, on a white rubber strap.
Production comprised 18 unique pieces. That figure covers the RM 051 as a whole, not the red-gold execution alone.

Design and engineering
- Calibre RM051Manually wound, providing hours, minutes, a tourbillon and a differential power-reserve display, with approximately 48 hours of autonomy.
- Differential power-reserve displayThe remaining power reserve is shown by a printed red line on a moving disc between 10 and 11 o’clock, rather than by a hand on a scale.
- Black onyx baseplateThe movement baseplate is manufactured from black onyx, a cryptocrystalline quartz chalcedony composed primarily of silicon dioxide — a stone baseplate rather than a metal one, unusual even within Richard Mille’s ornamental watches. The onyx is the BASEPLATE; listings that place it in the case have it wrong.
- Diamond-set phoenixThe phoenix is set with diamonds and integrated around the barrel, the power-reserve mechanism and the tourbillon rather than mounted as an independent dial element.
- Grade 5 titanium bridgesThe movement uses black-PVD-treated grade 5 titanium bridges together with a free-sprung balance and a torque-limiting crown.
- Set caseStones across the bezel and caseband of the tonneau case.
- Sapphire casebackThe movement and the reverse of the phoenix are visible from behind.
