Overview

The first Chronofiable®-certified Richard Mille, in an alumagnesium case

Launched in 2011, the RM 035 was the first Richard Mille timepiece to carry Chronofiable® certification. The calibre RMUL1 is a skeletonised manual-winding movement showing hours, minutes and seconds; the skeletonised movement weighs 4.3 grams, and arriving at that figure without losing shock resistance took a year of testing successive skeletonised titanium baseplates.

The case is alumagnesium, an aluminium, magnesium and copper alloy used to machine Formula 1 pistons for its resistance to mechanical pressure and high temperature. The watch is black with a red plaque on the flange and a perforated black rubber strap.

Design and engineering

  • Chronofiable® certificationThe test, developed in the early 1980s by CCF SA, compresses roughly six months of wear into 21 days. It covers monitoring of the movement functions, rate, amplitude at 0 °C and 50 °C, power reserve and winding velocity, together with linear and angular accelerations and some 20,000 shocks ranging from 250 to 5,500 m/s².
  • Alumagnesium case with Miarox® treatmentAfter machining, the alloy is given an electro-plasma oxidation treatment called Miarox®, producing a crystalline oxide ceramic coating. The dark colour comes from light-resistant, chemically inert spinels. The treatment improves durability, scratch resistance, wear and corrosion behaviour, and is biocompatible.
  • Skeletonised movement at 4.3 gramsThe figure is the weight of the MOVEMENT, not the case or the watch. The PVD-treated titanium baseplate is combined with bridges and balance cock in Titalyt®-treated titanium for rigidity and surface flatness.
  • Free-sprung balance with variable inertiaThe regulator index is eliminated; four small weights on the balance provide repeatable regulation and better behaviour under shock.
  • Movement mountingNo casing ring is used; the movement is mounted on chassis mounting rubbers (ISO SW) fixed by four titanium screws.
