A rotor that disengages itself when the mainspring is fully wound
The RM 030, introduced in 2011, carries a rotor that declutches automatically. When the power reserve reaches 50 hours, a purpose-built gear system disconnects the rotor from the winding barrel; when the reserve falls back to 40 hours, the rotor re-engages and a new winding phase begins. The wearer can follow those phases on the winding indicator at 12 o’clock, which reads on or off.
Richard Mille describes the system as a dynamic continuation of the torque sensor developed for its tourbillon watches, applied here to an automatic movement, and took four years to develop the concept. The purpose is to hold the mainspring at an ideal tension so that the movement and the oscillator work at the best constant torque-to-power ratio.
