The extra-flat rectangle in Titalyt® treated titanium
An RM 016 in grade 5 titanium treated with Titalyt®, a matt olive-grey case on a strap that matches it. The skeletonised dial carries large outlined Arabic numerals, with the date at 7 o’clock.
Introduced in 2007, the RM 016 was the first rectangular watch in the collection: ultra-thin and tapered to fit the wrist. In 2009 Richard Mille unveiled it in Titalyt®, the first time the treatment had been used in watchmaking. The case is immediately recognisable by its unique colour.

Design and engineering
- Titalyt®A titanium oxidation process using electro-plasma that increases the hardness of the metal, and so its resistance to friction, wear and corrosion, in accordance with AMS 2488D aerospace material norms. The case is also shockproof and scratchproof.
- Three-part caseThe case’s three sections need 202 separate machining operations. It is water resistant to 30 metres, sealed by three Nitril O-rings and assembled with 8 grade 5 titanium spline screws.
- Variable-geometry rotorExclusive to Richard Mille, the unidirectional rotor lets the winding be optimised to the owner’s lifestyle. Its wings are in 18-carat white gold with a high palladium content, and it runs on ceramic ball bearings.
