Overview
Automatic with oversize date, in blue
The RM 010 is Richard Mille’s non-tourbillon automatic, built around a skeletonised movement with hours, minutes, seconds and a date at 7 o’clock. It followed the RM 005 in 2006, when the market turned towards larger cases: the gear train was carried over and the baseplate and bridges skeletonised further. Those are grade 5 titanium — 90% titanium, 6% aluminium, 4% vanadium — ribbed using a methodology drawn from racing car engine development to reduce weight while retaining strength and flatness. Richard Mille notes that almost two kilos of pressure are held under control within the movement.
This execution is cased in 18k white gold and reads blue: the interior flange and the skeletonised movement beneath it are both blue-treated, where the standard RM 010 carries a black carbon fibre flange over a dark movement. The applied white Arabic numerals, the RM010 plaque at 9 o’clock and the red-tipped seconds hand are common to the family. The strap is black rubber on an 18k white gold and titanium double folding clasp.
The case was the subject of a year of research and development. Producing each one requires 68 stamping operations across the bezel, middle section and case back, with 202 separate machining operations per rough case.
Key details
Design and engineering
- Blue flange and movementThe interior flange and the skeletonised baseplate and bridges beneath it are blue, against applied white Arabic numerals and a red-tipped centre seconds hand. It is what separates this execution from the standard white gold RM 010, whose flange is black carbon fibre.
- Ribbed grade 5 titanium baseplateRibbed to reduce weight while retaining strength and flatness, using a methodology applied in racing car engine development. The skeletonised components are angled and polished by hand, then sandblasted and PVD treated.
- Variable-geometry rotorArm and flange in grade 2 titanium with six-position adjustment via grade 5 titanium screws, wings in 18-carat high-palladium white gold, weight segment in tungsten/cobalt alloy, ceramic ball bearings. Unidirectional, anticlockwise winding.
- Case production68 stamping operations across the three main case components; 202 separate machining operations per rough case. Machine tooling adjustment takes 8 days for the bezel and 5 days each for the middle section and case back.
- Three-position stemManual winding, time setting and date adjustment.
