Overview
Red gold split-seconds tourbillon on a carbon nanofibre baseplate

Released in 2003, the RM 008 adds a tourbillon carriage of 85 parts, weighing just 0.34 g, to the split-seconds chronograph of the RM 004. It was the first new split-seconds chronograph designed in the 21st century, and for several years the most complicated watch in the collection. The V2 moved to a carbon nanofibre baseplate, the fourth Richard Mille model to make that change.

Design and engineering
- Carbon nanofibre baseplateAn isotropic composite of carbon nanofibres moulded at 7,500 N/cm² and 2,000 °C, stable in every direction. Its ribbed edge keeps the baseplate and bridges rigid.
- Titanium split-seconds partsGear wheels and levers in titanium reduce inertia. With less friction on the spindle, the movement uses about 50% less energy, and the stutter of the split-seconds hand is virtually eliminated.
