Overview
The sky over Geneva
The Patek Philippe Celestial, reference 6104G-001, in white gold with 38 baguette diamonds in the bezel: a self-winding astronomical watch on calibre 240 LU CL C, 6.81 mm high, showing the northern sky, the moon's orbit and phases and the date.
Patek Philippe calls the Ref. 6104 Celestial an astronomical Grand Complication. Its instructions for the reference 6104G-001 describe a dial that permanently shows the night sky over the northern hemisphere, following the apparent movement of the stars and the position and phases of the moon through a lunar cycle, together with the times at which Sirius and the moon cross the meridian. A central hand points to the date on a scale at the outer edge of the dial, and 38 baguette diamonds are set in the white gold bezel. Patek Philippe no longer makes this reference.
The sky is built from three superposed sapphire-crystal discs, each two tenths of a millimetre thick, turning at different speeds. The background is a blue disc in a wheel with 279 teeth that tracks the orbital position of the moon and, through a planetary gear, drives a small disc showing the moon phases in a round aperture. Above it a 356-tooth wheel turns a transparent disc with the sky chart on its front and the Milky Way on its other side. An elliptical contour on the inside of the crystal frames the part of the sky visible from Geneva and places on the same latitude. The self-winding calibre 240 LU CL C carries all of this in a height of 6.81 mm, with 315 parts and 45 jewels.
For collectors
Patek Philippe states how it chose the gearing: from more than 25 billion calculated pairings of ratios it took the set with the smallest deviations, giving 0.05 seconds a day for the lunar day, 0.088 seconds a day for the sidereal day and 6.51 seconds per lunation for the moon phases.
Key details
Design and engineering
- Superposed discsThree sapphire-crystal discs, each two tenths of a millimetre thick, turn at different speeds under the crystal: the blue background disc for the moon's orbit, a small disc for the phases and a transparent disc for the sky chart, which Patek Philippe says gives an impression of depth.
- Sidereal and lunar timePatek Philippe gives the sidereal day as 23 hours, 56 minutes and 4.09892 seconds on average and the lunar day as 24 hours, 50 minutes and 28.328 seconds; the going train carries step-up and reduction ratios so each astronomical display keeps to its own period.
- Two crownsThe crown at 2 o'clock winds the watch and sets the time. The crown at 4 o'clock adjusts the moon when turned clockwise and the sky chart when turned counterclockwise, against a scale on the outer edge of the dial; the date is corrected by a push piece at 9 o'clock.
- Bezel38 baguette diamonds frame the sky chart in the white gold case.
