Overview
A self-winding Triple Complication
The Patek Philippe reference 5208R-001, a self-winding Triple Complication in rose gold: minute repeater, monopusher chronograph and instantaneous perpetual calendar with aperture displays, moon phase and day/night indicator, on calibre R CH 27 PS QI.
Patek Philippe's instructions for the reference 5208R-001 describe a rose gold case holding a movement the brand ranks among the most complex in horology: a minute repeater, a monopusher chronograph controlled by a column wheel with a horizontal clutch, and an instantaneous perpetual calendar with aperture displays, a moon phase and a day/night indicator. The brand adds that this Triple Complication is one of very few highly complex wristwatches that wind themselves. Patek Philippe no longer makes this reference.
A single pusher starts, stops and resets the chronograph, and its minute counter runs continuously and counts 60 minutes rather than the usual 30. Two minutes after midnight every calendar display except the moon phase and the day/night indicator jumps at once to the next day and, where due, the next month and year; a Roman IV in the aperture between 4 and 5 o'clock marks a leap year. The calibre R CH 27 PS QI is wound by a guilloched 22K gold minirotor and measures 32 mm across and 10.35 mm high, with 719 parts and 63 jewels; it runs at 21,600 semi-oscillations an hour on a Gyromax® balance with a Spiromax® balance spring in Silinvar®.
For collectors
Patek Philippe gives the moon phase an annual deviation of 11 minutes and 47 seconds, adding up to one day every 122 years and 45 days, and states that the calendar needs no correction until 28 February 2100 if the watch is wound every day.
Key details
Design and engineering
- Monopusher chronographStart, stop and reset all come from one pusher, a type Patek Philippe calls especially rare; the 60-minute counter runs continuously instead of jumping.
- Instantaneous calendarDay, date, month and leap-year cycle show in apertures and change together at two minutes past midnight; months of fewer than 31 days are recognised, from 30 September straight to 1 October and from 28 February to 1 March.
- Minute repeaterHours on the low-pitched gong, quarters as alternating double strikes on both gongs, minutes on the high-pitched gong: up to 32 strikes at 12:59.
- Case backs and waterDelivered with a sapphire-crystal back and an interchangeable solid back, exchanged only in Patek Philippe's Geneva workshops. The repeater slide's slot leaves the case unprotected against moisture.
