A self-winding minute repeater
The Patek Philippe minute repeater, reference 5078P-001, in platinum: a self-winding watch on calibre R 27 PS that strikes the hours, quarters and minutes on two gongs.
The reference 5078P-001 is a self-winding minute repeater in platinum. Patek Philippe's instructions for the reference set it in the brand's own history of the complication: Patek Philippe first fitted a minute repeater into a wristwatch in 1915, and the instructions credit the sound of the 5078P to the manufacture's metallurgical and acoustic research into its gongs. Patek Philippe no longer makes this reference.
On demand the repeater strikes the hours on the low-pitched gong, each quarter as an alternating double strike on both gongs, and then the minutes since the last quarter on the high-pitched gong: at 12:59 that is 12 low strikes, three double strikes and 14 high strikes, 32 in all. A slide in the case starts the sequence, which must run to its end before it is started again. The calibre R 27 PS is wound by a guilloched 22K gold minirotor and is 28 mm across and 5.05 mm high, with 342 parts and 39 jewels.
