A gem-set Calatrava around an enamel dial
The Patek Philippe Rare Handcrafts Pink Butterfly, reference 5077/356R-001, a Calatrava in rose gold with a cloisonné and paillonné enamel dial of a monarch butterfly among iris and baguette-cut sapphires and spessartites on the bezel and buckle, on a shiny fuchsia pink alligator strap. Self-winding calibre 240; 38 mm, 8.3 mm high.
The dial of 5077/356R-001 is a monarch butterfly among bearded iris in Grand Feu cloisonné and paillonné enamel. The petals and the butterfly took about 55 cm of gold wire (~0.23 g); the enameller worked from a palette of transparent, opaque and semi-opaque enamels in 23 colours, set tiny beads of white enamel on the wings for depth, and embedded gold leaf in the enamel — the paillonné technique — so the butterfly stands out from the dark ground. Each dial took 20 to 30 firings at 780°C to 800°C. The bezel is set with 32 purple baguette-cut sapphires (0.99 ct) and 29 baguette-cut spessartites (0.84 ct), the buckle with 6 purple baguette-cut sapphires (0.4 ct); Patek Philippe totals them at 38 sapphires (1.39 cts) shading from light pink to purple and 29 brown spessartites (0.84 ct). Patek Philippe presents it as a limited edition of ten watches, on a shiny fuchsia pink alligator strap.
The reference 5077 is the Calatrava of Patek Philippe's Rare Handcrafts collection: a round case 38 mm across and 8.3 mm high, with a sapphire crystal back and a bezel, lugs and prong buckle set with stones chosen to the palette of the dial. Dauphine-style hands in the case metal show the hours and minutes.
The movement is the self-winding calibre 240, which Patek Philippe lists as ultra-thin: 27.5 mm across and 2.53 mm high, with 152 parts and 27 jewels, wound by a 22K gold minirotor set off-centre in the movement rather than a full rotor turning above it. It runs at 21,600 semi-oscillations an hour on a Gyromax® balance with a Spiromax® balance spring, has a power reserve of at least 48 hours and carries the Patek Philippe Seal. It is on view through the sapphire crystal back — the one part of the watch, beside the dial, that Patek Philippe invites the wearer to look at.
For collectors
Patek Philippe matches the stones on the bezel and lugs to the palette of the enamel — a gradation of sapphires for a bird's plumage, baguettes of two colours around a butterfly, diamonds around engraved lettering — and the strap is chosen to the same palette.
