Overview
A four-axis tourbillon on a rotating platform
The Jacob & Co. Astronomia Four-Axis Tourbillon, reference AT180.30.AA.UA.A, in an 18-carat white gold case with a single-block sapphire caseband, 47 mm across and 27 mm high. It is on a blue alligator leather strap with an 18-carat white gold deployment buckle. This version is a pièce unique.
This version is in 18-carat white gold, with a blue skeleton subdial and a power reserve of 30 hours.
In 2014 Jacob Arabo turned his interest in space into the Astronomia concept, modelling a planetary system at the scale of a wristwatch. Here a vertical platform with two arms rises from the centre of the movement and turns once every 60 seconds. That turn also works as the seconds hand and as the first axis of the tourbillon.
The tourbillon sits at the end of one arm. It is a flying carriage with three axes of its own, turning in 60, 18 and 15 seconds, and Jacob & Co. describes it, together with the platform, as the first four-axis tourbillon. Jacob & Co. says the platform draws so much energy that the escapement needs a constant force device to protect it. Hand-wound calibre JCAM54 has 485 components.
Key details
Design and engineering
- PlatformA vertical, three-dimensional platform with two arms makes one full turn every 60 seconds. Jacob & Co. says it is the fastest-turning platform in the Astronomia range.
- TourbillonA flying carriage held at a single point, with axes turning in 60, 18 and 15 seconds. The platform’s own rotation adds the fourth axis.
- Constant forceJacob & Co. describes its patented constant force device as a remontoire: a buffer that holds energy for the escapement and releases it at a steady strength, reloaded every 1/6th of a second.
- Time displayThe hour and minute dial sits on a separate arm. A differential turns it against the platform at the same speed, so the time stays upright and readable.
- Dial finishSkeleton subdial in blue polycarbonate with 5N applied indices, and 5N gold dauphine hands.
- CaseSingle-block sapphire caseband, a curved anti-reflective sapphire crystal and an 18-carat white gold caseback. Water resistant to 30 m.
