Tourbillon and remontoir
The F.P. Journe Tourbillon Souverain, reference T, in platinum on a leather strap with the 18K yellow gold and whitened guilloché silver dial. 38 mm and 9.9 mm high, manually wound on calibre 1498: a tourbillon driven through a remontoire, with hours and minutes at 3 o'clock and the power reserve at 10.
This Tourbillon Souverain was produced between 1999 and 2003. F.P. Journe presents it as a world first: the first wristwatch with a remontoire, or constant-force device, and in the brand's words the only wristwatch with one. Journe's reasoning, as the brand gives it, was that a remontoire and a tourbillon working together would give better isochronism.
A tourbillon carries the escapement and balance in a rotating cage, so that the rate errors gravity causes in the vertical positions are averaged out; the brand credits the eighteenth-century invention with keeping the rate stable when the watch stands upright. The remontoire deals with a different error. A small secondary spring, rewound at intervals by the mainspring, drives the escapement, so the force reaching the balance stays nearly the same as the mainspring runs down. Hours and minutes are read on a subdial at 3 o'clock and the power reserve at 10.

The specification shows the remontoire at work. F.P. Journe gives the balance amplitude as 280° dial-up at full wind and the same 280° after 24 hours, where a movement driven directly by its mainspring loses amplitude as the spring unwinds.
