A striking watch that shows its hammers
The F.P. Journe Sonnerie Souveraine, reference GS, a unique piece in platinum with the 18K yellow gold and whitened guilloché silver dial. 40 mm, manually wound on calibre 1505: grande and petite sonnerie in passing, a minute repeater on demand, and the striking hammers visible through the dial.
The Sonnerie Souveraine in this form is a unique piece, now in a private collection. François-Paul Journe says it was extremely complex to develop because of one idea: that the hammers could be seen striking through the dial.
Calibre 1505 is a manually wound striking movement. It chimes in passing at each quarter hour in grande or petite sonnerie, can be set to silence, and repeats the time to the minute on demand. In grande sonnerie the hours are struck again with every quarter; in petite sonnerie the quarters are struck on their own and the hours only on the hour. Hours and minutes are read at 3 o'clock and the seconds at 6, with power-reserve and striking-mode indications.

F.P. Journe gives three autonomy figures, and together they show what striking costs: 120 ± 2 hours with the strike unused, about 48 hours with it working, and about 24 hours of running once the strike has been exhausted.

- Hammers in viewThe dial gives a view of the hammers as they strike, the feature Journe singles out as the difficulty of the development.
- ControlsThe crown has two positions, for winding and setting. The pusher at 2 o'clock releases the minute repeater; the pusher at 4 o'clock selects the striking mode.
- EscapementA linear escapement with a 15-tooth wheel.
- DecorationPerlage on the base plate, circular côtes on the bridges, polished and bevelled screw heads, pegs with polished domed ends, steel parts decorated by hand, and engraving in three dimensions.
