Constant force and a deadbeat second
The F.P. Journe Tourbillon Souverain Set with Diamonds, reference TJ, in platinum set with 93 baguette-cut diamonds, on the platinum bracelet and folding clasp set with 332 baguette-cut diamonds; white gold dial set with 201 brilliant-cut diamonds. 40 mm and 9.9 mm high, calibre 1403 with tourbillon, remontoir d'égalité and deadbeat seconds.
Here the Tourbillon Souverain is set with diamonds: a 40 mm platinum case with 93 baguette-cut diamonds (VVS1, F/G, about 22.48 carats) and a white gold dial with 201 brilliant-cut diamonds (about 0.52 carat) around whitened guilloché silver sub-dials. F.P. Journe offered it on a leather strap with a platinum clasp set with 18 baguette-cut diamonds, or on a platinum bracelet and folding clasp set with 332, and gives its production as 2004 to 2015.
F.P. Journe launched its brand in 1999 with the Tourbillon Souverain, the first model of the Souveraine collection, which the brand describes as the only tourbillon wristwatch with a remontoir. The watch built on calibre 1403 is the later construction: it kept the remontoir, added an independent deadbeat second and replaced the original model. The brand values the remontoir for its timekeeping and presents the deadbeat second as a way of reading time more exactly.
Between the mainspring and the escapement sits a remontoir d'égalité, a small spring that the mainspring rearms at regular intervals and that alone drives the escapement. The force at the balance therefore stays level while the mainspring runs down. The deadbeat second at 6 o'clock stands still until a second has fully elapsed, then moves on. Hours and minutes are on an off-centre dial at 3 o'clock, the 42-hour power reserve at 12, and a sapphire case back shows the movement.
For collectors
The specification gives the same amplitude, 280° dial-up, at full wind and after 24 hours, which is the remontoir's work made visible in a figure. The earlier Tourbillon Souverain with remontoir but without deadbeat seconds is the one F.P. Journe describes as a collector's timepiece, with about a hundred produced; the seconds display at 6 o'clock separates the two.
