A perpetual calendar that jumps
The F.P. Journe Quantième Perpétuel Black Label, reference QP, in platinum with the blackened gold and whitened silver dial and rhodium-plated steel hands. 10.85 mm high, self-winding on calibre Octa 1300.3 in 18K rose gold, with an instantaneous perpetual calendar: day and month at 12 o'clock, large date at 6, leap year at the centre.
The Black Label version, produced between 2016 and 2021, has a blackened gold and whitened silver dial with rhodium-plated steel hands in a platinum case. F.P. Journe ties the collection to its output of about 900 watches a year: it wanted a still more exclusive piece, offered only to people who already own one of its watches.
A perpetual calendar keeps the right date through months of 28, 29, 30 and 31 days and through the four-year leap cycle, so the movement needs a mechanical memory of 1461 days. Like every perpetual calendar it will need a one-day correction on 1 March 2100, which the Gregorian calendar does not count as a leap year. F.P. Journe built its version on the automatic Octa calibre 1300.3 in 18K rose gold and designed it, in the brand's account, for readability and simple use.
The leap year is counted by a small toothed planet wheel, linked to the month mechanism, that turns once in four years on a swivel wheel; in the fourth year it lets 29 February show before moving on to 1 March. Day and month appear in two apertures at 12 o'clock and the date in a double aperture at 6. The changes are instantaneous: an F.P. Journe system stores energy, releases it at once when the date, day or month turns, and slows the parts at the end of their travel. The year of the cycle shows at the centre under the hands, 1, 2 and 3 in black and L in red.
For collectors
F.P. Journe sets its perpetual calendar against ones that are often difficult to adjust. Almost everything is corrected from the three-position crown, date and day together one way and the day alone the other; only the month and leap year use a separate corrector, hidden and protected beneath the lug at 1 o'clock. The four-year cycle can be set without a tool.
