Five days on one long spring
The F.P. Journe Automatique Réserve, reference AR2, in 18K 6N gold on the matching bracelet, both matte hammered, with the ruthenium-covered guilloché silver dial and 5N gold numerals. 44 mm and 11 mm high, self-winding on calibre 1300.3 in 18K rose gold, with a very large date and a 160-hour reserve.
This Automatique Réserve belongs to F.P. Journe's lineSport collection and, in the brand's account, was produced between 2018 and 2024. The 44 mm case, 11 mm high, has a bezel inlaid with ceramic and houses the self-winding Octa calibre 1300.3 in 18K rose gold. The Octa is the movement Journe built for autonomy: by his account it took three years of development, and he then set out to fit other complications into it at the same size.
Journe's route to a long reserve was a longer mainspring rather than an extra wheel in the train, a method that in his account leaves too little energy at the balance. A spring of that length has low torque, which he says is what makes very fast automatic winding possible. The balance is free-sprung, with four adjustable inertia weights and a flat Anachron spring, and beats at 21,600 vibrations an hour. The reserve of 160 ± 10 hours is read at 9:30, day and night at 7:30, and a very large date at 1 o'clock.
For collectors
F.P. Journe publishes amplitude late in the reserve as well as near full wind: 280° dial-up at 12 hours and 220° at 90 hours. The second figure is the one that tests Journe's argument for a long, low-torque spring, that the balance stays properly supplied well into a reserve rated at 160 hours.

Design and engineering
- Long mainspringThe reserve comes from spring length, not from an added wheel in the train, so the balance does not have to be made smaller and less stable to run on weak torque. In Journe's account the spring's low torque also allows very fast automatic winding.

- Very large dateAn instant-jump calendar at 1 o'clock with a window of 4.7 × 2.6 mm. The crown winds in position 0, corrects the date anti-clockwise in position 1 and sets the time in position 2.
- Case and bracelet18K 6N gold with a matte hammered finish and ceramic inlaid in the bezel. The links next to the case are articulated, and the folding clasp adjusts by about 5 mm.
- DialSilver guilloché covered with ruthenium, 5N gold applied numerals, and the small seconds at 6 o'clock in whitened guilloché silver.
