Overview
The Great Sphinx of Tanis, in hand-engraved gold
The Vacheron Constantin Métiers d'Art Tribute to Great Civilisations – Grand Sphinx de Tanis, reference 7620A/000R-B927, in 18K pink gold with an engraved applique of the Sphinx of Tanis, on a blue alligator strap. Self-winding calibre 2460 G4/2 with hours, minutes, day and date by aperture; 42 mm, 12.93 mm high, Hallmark of Geneva certified.
The reference 7620A/000R-B927 is one of four artworks in Vacheron Constantin's first Tribute to Great Civilisations series, made with the Louvre Museum and reproducing works chosen from the Persian Empire of Darius I, pharaonic Egypt, Hellenistic Greece and Imperial Rome as miniature sculpted gold appliques. This piece, in 18K pink gold, carries a hand-engraved 18K gold applique of the Great Sphinx of Tanis, its wings set in champlevé enamel. The sapphire crystal above it is engraved by metallization with hieroglyphic inscriptions taken from a cartouche of the Sphinx of Tanis, and the outer frieze is worked in champlevé enamel representing the Ancient Egyptian Empire. Hours, minutes, day and date are shown on tone-on-tone rotating discs read through the dial's apertures. The case is 42 mm across and 12.93 mm high, on a blue alligator leather strap closed by a double clasp in 18K pink gold.
The movement is the self-winding calibre 2460 G4/2, 31 mm across and 6.05 mm high, with 237 parts and 27 jewels, running at 28,800 V.P.H. (4 Hz) for a stated 40-hour power reserve, and includes a balance-stop function. The watch is certified to the Hallmark of Geneva, which the brand's own account traces to 1886, when the Republic and Canton of Geneva introduced the mark as a standard for excellence in Geneva watchmaking.
For collectors
Time here is read from tone-on-tone rotating discs behind the dial's apertures rather than from hands - the display format the brand uses across the whole eight-piece Tribute to Great Civilisations series, both in this first series and the later one.
