Overview
The Lion of Darius, set against turquoise and jasper
The Vacheron Constantin Métiers d'Art Tribute to Great Civilisations – Lion de Darius, reference 7620A/000R-B926, in 18K pink gold with an engraved gold applique of the Lion of Darius, on a grey alligator strap. Self-winding calibre 2460 G4/2 with hours, minutes, day and date by aperture; 42 mm, 12.93 mm high, Hallmark of Geneva certified.
The reference 7620A/000R-B926 is the Persian piece in the same first series, in 18K pink gold. Its hand-engraved 18K gold applique, finished with a patina, depicts the Lion of Darius, which the brand describes as one of the few surviving decorative elements from the Palace of Darius at Susa. The ground behind it is worked in stone marquetry from turquoise and mochaite jasper. The sapphire crystal is engraved by metallization with writing drawn from a tablet inscribed in Old Persian, and the outer frieze combines champlevé enamel with engraved metal, based on the Frieze of Archers from the Palace of Darius. Hours, minutes, day and date are shown on tone-on-tone rotating discs through the dial's apertures. The case is 42 mm across and 12.93 mm high, on a grey alligator leather strap closed by a double clasp in 18K pink gold.
The movement is the self-winding calibre 2460 G4/2, 31 mm across and 6.05 mm high, with 237 parts and 27 jewels, running at 28,800 V.P.H. (4 Hz) for a stated 40-hour power reserve, with a balance-stop function alongside the hour, minute, day and date displays. The watch carries the Hallmark of Geneva, dated by the brand to 1886 and described as a mark of provenance, craftsmanship and reliability.
For collectors
The sapphire crystal itself is engraved with script from an Old Persian tablet, rather than the surrounding frieze alone carrying the era's inscriptions - a detail the page states specifically for this artwork among the eight.
