The RM 35-03 Automatic Winding Rafael Nadal
This execution is the all-carbon RM 35-03: bezel and caseband in Carbon TPT®, black case screws, a red rubber-clad crown and a black rubber strap. Through the dial the butterfly rotor’s two arms show yellow, against pink flange markers and pink pointers on the ON/OFF and function-selector scales.
The RM 35-03 is the fourth watch in the RM 035 collection and introduces the butterfly rotor, a patented winding mechanism that hands control of the automatic winding to the wearer. Pressing the pusher at 7 o’clock — sport mode — deploys the rotor’s two weights through 180°, returning the centre of gravity to the middle so that the rotor is balanced and stops winding the barrel. An ON/OFF indicator at 6 o’clock shows the current state.

Design and engineering
- Butterfly rotorTwo weights in grade 5 titanium and metal. In their initial position they displace the centre of gravity radially, generating the torque that winds the barrel. Pressing the sport-mode pusher at 7 o’clock deploys them through 180° via a dedicated gear train, recentring the mass, balancing the rotor and cancelling its winding power. Three years of development.
- Why the rotor can be switched offThe point is protection rather than convenience: high-intensity activity would otherwise wind the barrel far faster than it is designed for. Salvador Arbona, Technical Director for Movements, compares it to a driver switching a transmission into sport mode. Earlier Richard Mille automatics used a variable-geometry rotor whose setting only an authorised watchmaker could change.
- ON/OFF indicatorAt 6 o’clock, showing whether the rotor is active.
- Function selectorA push-button at 2 o’clock selects winding, neutral and hand-setting, with a hand at 2 o’clock displaying the selected mode.
- Baseplate and bridges in grade 5 titaniumBlack PVD and electroplasma treated. The baseplate is wet sandblasted with grey electroplasma treatment; the bridges are hand ground, wet sandblasted and Titalyt® or PVD treated, with hand-polished locking sections, burnished pivots and pinions with undercuts.
- Carbon TPT® caseCarbon fibres divided into parallel filaments and laid in layers no thicker than 45 microns, impregnated with resin, woven with the weft rotated 45° between layers, heated to 120 °C at 6 bar and machined on CNC at Richard Mille. The striated surface is the layers themselves, so no two cases show the same pattern.
- FlangeMicroblasted grade 5 titanium, punctuated with the numerals 3, 6, 9 and 12, which slant inwards.
