Red gold execution of the flyback chronograph

The RM 11-03 was introduced in 2016 as the replacement for the RM 011, which had been in the collection since 2007. Richard Mille’s stated aim was to give the new calibre a three-dimensional quality and bring its complexity visually forward. The tripartite tonneau case was reworked at the same time, its lines modernised without, in the brand’s words, denaturing the watch.

Richard Mille offered the reference in red gold, white gold and titanium at launch, and later in Carbon TPT®, Quartz TPT® and ceramic. This is the full red gold execution: bezel, caseband and back bezel all in 18K red gold, so that the raised pillars along the flanks read gold rather than the grey titanium of the two-material version. The crown is grade 5 titanium, its form taken from competition wheel rims and tyre treads; the ribbed pushers recall pedal grooves and are capped in NTPT carbon.

The calibre carries a flyback chronograph with a countdown function and an annual calendar. The oversize date sits in a horizontal aperture below 12 o’clock and the month between 4 and 5 o’clock, the calendar adjusting automatically for months of 30 and 31 days.

Design and engineering

• Calibre RMAC3Skeletonised automatic winding movement with hours, minutes, seconds, flyback chronograph, 60-minute countdown timer at 9 o’clock, 12-hour totaliser, oversize date, month indicator and variable-geometry rotor. The movement measures 30.25 × 28.45 mm with a thickness of 9.00 mm and runs on 68 jewels at 28,800 vph (4 Hz).
• Double barrelTwo barrels mounted side by side, which Richard Mille specifies for stable coupling, providing circa 55 hours (± 10%) of power reserve. Actual reserve depends on how much the chronograph is used.
• Baseplate and bridgesGrade 5 titanium — 90% titanium, 6% aluminium, 4% vanadium — for rigidity and for the performance of the gear trains. The upper bridge is satin-brushed grade 5 titanium, contrasting with the PVD-coated titanium of the movement beneath; a satin-brushed PVD-treated lower bridge frames the double barrel on the caseback side.
• Variable-geometry rotorGrade 5 titanium, satin-brushed and PVD-treated, mounted on ceramic ball bearings, its form drawn from Formula 1 aerodynamic appendages. Two microblasted and chamfered wings in 18K white gold set the rotor’s inertia across six positions, matching winding to the wearer’s activity level.
• Free-sprung balance with variable inertiaGlucydur®, four arms, moment of inertia 4.8 mg·cm², angle of lift 53°, with an AK3 balance spring and Incabloc 908.22.211.100 shock protection. At 4 Hz it is specified as shock-resistant and more precisely tunable than an indexed balance.
• Three-position winding stemW for winding, D for date, H for hand setting.
• Annual calendarAutomatic adjustment for months of 30 and 31 days. The oversize date sits in a red-outlined horizontal aperture below 12 o’clock, the month display between 4 and 5 o’clock.
• Tripartite case in red goldBezel, caseband and back bezel all in 18K red gold, where the RG TI execution combines gold bezels with a titanium caseband. Reworked from the RM 011, with chamfering and buffing carried out entirely by hand and the case held together by 20 grade 5 titanium spline screws.
