Overview
Automatic Sport, green Quartz TPT®
The Nafi Thiam model of the RM 07-04 Automatic Sport, in green Quartz TPT® on a pink Velcro® strap. Richard Mille made the RM 07-04 as its first women’s sports watch, and at 36 grams including the strap it is the lightest piece in its ladies’ collection.
Five of the six RM 07-04 models are cased in Quartz TPT®, built from layers of silica threads, and one in Carbon TPT®. The Quartz TPT® pieces come in cream white, mauve, salmon pink, green or dark blue, and Richard Mille states that the colour alters none of the material’s lightness, non-allergenic properties or resistance to shocks, UV rays and wear. Each case colour is chosen to work with the strap, the tips of the hands and the flange.
Three years of development went into the watch and its CRMA8 calibre, the most compact calibre Richard Mille has developed: a skeletonised automatic movement, integrated with the case so its workings stay visible, and built to resist shocks of 5,000 g. As in a car’s gearbox, a push-piece at 4 o’clock selects winding, neutral or hand-setting, and a hand at 5 o’clock shows the choice.
Nafi Thiam
Nafi Thiam, the Belgian heptathlete, was the first female athlete to join the Richard Mille athletes team, in 2018, and wears the RM 07-04 Automatic Sport. She was crowned World Champion in London in 2017, the year she scored 7,013 points, and won the heptathlon again at the 2022 World Championships. Richard Mille counts her among the partners who needed a lighter piece; as she puts it, “There are definitely similarities between my body and the watch.”

Design and engineering
- Quartz TPT® caseLayers of parallel silica filaments no thicker than 45 microns, each turned 45° to the one below, heated to 120 °C at 6 bars, then machined on a CNC machine at Richard Mille’s manufacturing facilities. Every case shows its own striations.
- Case constructionWater-resistant to 50 metres thanks to two Nitrile O-rings, and assembled with 20 spline screws in grade 5 titanium and 316L stainless steel washers.
- Calibre CRMA8Skeletonised automatic with hours, minutes and function selector, and the most compact calibre Richard Mille has developed. Its compactness considerably increases the assembly time for the watchmaker.
- Inverted function selectorA push-piece at 4 o’clock selects neutral (N), winding (W) or hand-setting (H) and protects the winding stem from stress; a hand at 5 o’clock shows the function. The assembly is inverted relative to the brand’s other selectors, so its kinematics are visible.
- Flange and titanium architectureThe grade 5 titanium flange is worked as if it belonged to the movement and carries the openwork window of the function selector. Baseplate and bridges are grade 5 titanium with black PVD and electroplasma treatments, for rigidity and precise surface flatness.
- Free-sprung balance with variable inertiaThe regulator index is eliminated; four small adjustable weights on the balance allow more accurate, repeatable calibration and greater reliability under shock.
- Platinum rotor and fast-rotating barrelA platinum rotor with the OneWay® winding system and ceramic ball bearings winds a barrel that turns once every 5 hours instead of 7.5, reducing mainspring adhesion. Power reserve is around 50 hours.
- Shock resistanceAfter a battery of tests, from the Charpy test to the trap door and ageing tests, the watch demonstrated its ability to withstand accelerations of over 5,000 g.
- Hand finishingHand-polished anglage, microblasted milled sections and sinks; satin-finished, hand-bevelled steel parts; wheels with diamond-tool concave chamfering and circular-finished faces.
