Blue and yellow markings on a sapphire case
The photograph shows a sapphire-cased RM 056 with a blue inner flange, a blue crown and yellow scale markings. That combination identifies the RM 056 Felipe Massa 10th Anniversary, released in 2015 in a limited edition of ten pieces to mark ten years of the partnership between Richard Mille and the Brazilian Formula 1 driver. Its flanges, transfers, push-pieces and crowns carry blue and yellow, Massa’s racing colours; his emblem sits at 1 o’clock and his signature is engraved on the reverse.
Mechanically it is the RM 056: a manual winding tourbillon with split-seconds chronograph, power reserve, torque and function indicators, on a skeletonised grade 5 titanium baseplate. The three-part sapphire case for this edition is quoted at around 1,000 hours of work per case, of which some 430 hours are filing and 350 hours polishing.

Design and engineering
- Sapphire caseFront bezel, caseband and back bezel are each cut and milled from solid blocks of sapphire. Sapphire is aluminium oxide, rated 9 on the Mohs scale and 1,800 Vickers, and can be worked only with diamond-tipped tooling.
- Calibre RMCC1A manual winding tourbillon movement in grade 5 titanium with a split-seconds chronograph, power reserve, torque and function indicators. Its architecture derives from the RM 008 movement, reworked for reduced weight and lower chronograph friction.
- Racing colour schemeBlue and yellow are applied to the flanges, transfers, push-pieces and crowns. Felipe Massa’s emblem is placed at 1 o’clock, and his signature is engraved on the caseback.
- Skeletonised grade 5 titanium baseplateThe alloy is 90% titanium, 6% aluminium and 4% vanadium, specified for its rigidity, corrosion resistance and biocompatibility, and for the low-friction support it gives the going train.
- Fast-rotating barrel and variable-inertia balanceA fast-rotating winding barrel delivers a more constant force to the going train; the variable-inertia balance is adjusted by weights rather than a regulator index.
- Case finishingAround 1,000 hours per case, of which some 430 are filing and 350 polishing across the bezel, case middle and caseback assembly.
