Invisibly set stones around a flying tourbillon
The Jacob & Co. Brilliant Flying Tourbillon, reference BT546.40.AA.UA.A, in an 18-carat rose gold case, 47 mm across and 14.65 mm high. Its case and dial are invisibly set with baguette-cut multicoloured sapphires, on a white alligator leather strap with an 18-carat rose gold butterfly deployant buckle. This version is a pièce unique.
Multicoloured sapphires are set on the case, dial, crown and buckle: 404 in all (≈35.70 ct). The movement carries 338 white diamonds (≈1.32 ct).
Jacob & Co. introduced the Brilliant collection for women in 2017. The cases are round and have no lugs, and the strap is fixed directly to the case. The case is shaped like a pebble, and Jacob & Co. says its rounded edges give the collection its brilliance. Jacob & Co. says it sets stones only by the invisible technique, so no prongs or visible metal interrupt the surface.
Hand-wound calibre JCBM01 shows its one-minute flying tourbillon through an opening in the dial. The carriage is held only from its base, so there is no upper bridge. The movement is set with 338 brilliant-cut white diamonds, seen through the caseback. Setting stones on bridges is delicate work, because the pressure can bend the parts.
